It is the 41st millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day. So that he may never truly die.
Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battle fleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor’s will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines.
Among the hundreds of Chapters of Space Marines, one stands alone. Bound by Oaths to each other and their Eternal Vigil over the Galaxy.
Since first reaching for the stars, it has been the plight of mankind to be beset on all sides by its enemies. Against vile xenos breeds and heretics sworn to the service of the Dark Gods, the defenders of humanity have waged an unending war to maintain mankind’s dominance of the galaxy.
While the defense of the Imperium from the enemies without has always been of utmost importance, perhaps the most dangerous of all mankind’s myriad enemies are those that strike from within. To this end, and with authority superseded only by the Emperor of Mankind himself, the Holy Ordos of the Inquisition stands watchful. With adamantine will and unshakeable resolve, the men and women of this noble body garrison the bulwark around the soul of the Imperium.
At the request of the Holy Ordos, and by secret decree of the High Lords of Terra, the Chapter was founded. With the need great and time short, the Chapter is founded utilizing the principles of the Knight Errant. Rather than employing the proven, yet centuries-long process of founding, this Chapter is comprised of some of the best and brightest of the hundred-fold Chapters of the Space Marines. Peerless warriors drawn from the ancient first founding chapters – such as the Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Ultramarines – while others originate from any of the thousand, far-flung chapters that comprise the Adeptus Astartes.
Entrusted to Lord Inquisitor Karvayne, the Holy Ordos names Valrak its head. The task is simple and, yet, of the utmost importance: defend the Imperium from all that would threaten it. With so haughty a mission, Chapter Master Valrak, with the aid of Lord Inquisitor Karvayne, began the long and arduous task of selecting and retrieving from their far-flung war zones and recruiting worlds those Astartes that would be the brethren to join.
Centuries past, the force that is finally assembled is a Chapter unlike any other. Without traditions and common culture to naturally bind them, the bonds of brotherhood are fused in the furnace of war. They are strong. They must be. Failure is not an option.
(The Oath all Brothers take upon their induction into the Chapter)
